Water Cooling

Postby munkey » Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:27 pm

After running my HOR cat today I could not see any water exiting the cooling system. After 2-3 mins I brought the boat ashore and checked the motor and esc both were just warm to touch. Ive located the problem to the wedge rudder not allowing enough flow in. Should I get the rudder drillind out to allow more water in or fit a seperate water pick up or not worry and leave things alone.
Also if the motor is cool can I drop a prop size to increase the speed but not damage anything.

The wedge ruddur on these cats can pump more than sufficient water but it may be that it is blocked by swarf. Be careful if you drill it out as there is not much room for error. I'd suggest that you do a quick check by removint the tube from the top of the rudder - you should get a high water jet.

Are you sure that there are no kinks in the water tube - more likely and easier to get.

You can drop a prop size but it will not increase speed. If you increase prop size do so carefully, short burts and check temperatures.

Thanks Allen
I've checked the rest of the system and it's all clear so it has to be the rudder.
Also should the esc be cooled first or the motor first. Which gets hotter?

ESC first - it can do without hot water being pumped over it to warm it up ;) I suggest you check it out as I said above or some equivalent way before you start in with the drill.

Ok so I ran the boat today and still no cooling water. When I removed the pipe from the top of the rudder and ran the boat a small trickle was all that came out. Anyone got any good ideas? As allen said I don't really want to start drilling more holes in the rudder as its very precise drilling and it shouldn't need it.

It must be that there is a blockage somewhere in the rudder - could be not fully drilled or could be swarf. The water nipple unscrews so unscrew it and check that. then use some wire to probe the rudder. If you are comfortable then check the holes are clear with a drill. If you still have a problem send the rudder blade back and I'll replace it.
